What constitutes a High End tattoo machine? In an industry that has no standard and still sells "entry level" machines and kits - WHEN THE IS NO ROOM FOR "ENTRY LEVEL" IN ART THAT REQUIRES SKILL AND PRECISION? WHERE HEALTH AND CLIENT SAFETY IS ALSO A MAJOR CONCERN!

FOR ANY SUPPLIER TO BELIEVE THAT THERE IS AN ENTRY LEVEL KIT, MACHINE OR PRODUCT IS AN INSULT TO THE CLIENT AND TO MODERN RESPONSIBLE TATTOOING.

A KIT...

What are the credentials of these builders or suppliers? Maybe they have a fancy french name or the all american name which brings romantic images of nostalgic Americana to mind? maybe it's a long German name... maybe they don't tattoo. Just like most of these suppliers who carry these products and push them as what they're advertised.. yet they don't know what is needed to make that machine a shader or liner and they do not take responsibility for the product's function or lack of function, they have no clue how to diagnose or repair any problem! He sells it and then hopes the builder knows what he's talking about, the builder who has made up his own criteria.

Once there was a quote from a builder that went "tattoo machines are a constant learning experience.." . Constant? if he was an expert, and this one seemed to be considered one by the prestigious magazine which interviewed him, he would have learned that there are specific requirements all electromagnetic machines need to function at their highest potential.

These things, these characteristics (specifications, geometry, material, gauges, spring flexibility, coil permeability) are critical because of the dependence that each component has on another. There can be no deviation on many of these objectives. From the current which causes a magnetic field once it passes from the wall to the power supply, into the binding posts, into the terminals... through the wire saturating the steel core (which IS your magnet) causing an attraction of the armature bar, discharging the circuit and allowing the rear spring to take the armature bar back up to the contact screw... all these components have a function which should not be taken for granted. This is only a brief description of function... never mind the specifications on the frame, gauges and material the wire and springs are made from. Yet, what is considered a "high end" machine has substandard objectives. High End?? There is no validity to their claims.

Backward innovations... Failed Knowledge, hype, false claims... educate yourselves, don't leave room for mediocrity to enter our world. We can regulate. Educate yourselves.

We met Jim Adams through email. He introduced himself as a tattoo artist with a long history who is now retired. He had traveled through the midweset tattooing, ending up in Florida. In our eyes, having this much history and at the same time staying objective andcurrent is a characteristic ALL tattoo artists should have. There are solutions for every problem.

We credit Jim with the genious behind our BLACK WIDOW MACHINE. He's the one who generously shared his idea with us. He is no "one trick pony".. retired, yes... and still working on machine ideas. There are ideas too complex to share and still in the process of patent protection. We guarantee that NONE of you are ready for what he has up his sleeve. The first part is a short email about himself.

Milton Zeis bakelite machine.

"I have been farting around with tattoo machines for decades and have always been more interested in inventing a better tattoo machine than actually tattooing. I have busted my brain on rotaries and I even tried to make an air driven tattoo machine way back in the 1970s. It could have been a success but I lacked funding. I came to the conclusion long ago there will never be anything better to tattoo with than an electromagnetic coil machine. Even though there are fantastic performing machines today, I feel there are still advances to be made. I started tattooing with $15 Milt Zeis machines that threw a spark that could weld a battleship together. The tubes had cheap chrome plate and a piece of rubber hose for a grip. The power unit was a door bell transformer screwed to a piece of Bakelite. Looking back, I don't think it even had anything to convert it to D.C. I used acetate stencils and charcoal powder, mixed lumpy powdered pigment with Listerine and used half a gelatin capsule for an ink cap (by the time the tattoo was done the gelatin caps would grow into something that resembled a miniature used rubber from sucking the Listerine out of the ink).

Also as insane as it sounds, by today's standards nobody used gloves except Carol Nightingale up in Canada. I remember seeing a picture of him with gloves and saying "look at this guy he thinks hes a doctor" he was really ahead of his time. Look up the patent on his machine some time, it looks like he used an entire kid's erector set to make it, adjustments up the kazoo. I went to the first tattoo convention. It was held by Dave Yerkew (North American tattoo club). Nobody in the whole convention was wearing gloves! Beside the disease factor, can you believe tattooers willfully held their hand in a wad of someone's sweaty armpit hair? I grew up in Illinois, about an hour's drive from Rockford Illinois, that's the town old time tattoo supplier Milton Zeis lived in.

Back in 1972, I was looking through an old 1953 popular mechanics magazine for old car adds and in the back of the rag was a tiny add for tattoo supplies. I sent a letter and it was forwarded through a couple addresses and ended up at Milt Zeis's son-in-law's house. Milt was already dead but his son-in-law was still selling supplies. I got friendly with his grandson and was allowed to come over and go down in the basement when I needed stuff. They had 55 gallon drums of pigment from DuPont, antique hand coil winders and tons of old flash $3 a sheet.

They had a big trunk that was full of original photos, mostly of Cindy Ray from Australia. A lot of them were of piercing and back then this was unusual and not tied in with tattooing so much. That basement was like walking into a time machine. You could just feel the history in the air. It gave you goose bumps. Art, remember my name. "The book just arrived and thanks for the CD. I have not watched it yet and I have only just flipped through the book but WOW !!!!! Back in the day, if you wrote this book they would be pulling your body out of a dumpster and that way of thinking is JUST WRONG. The secrecy is small minded, petty and full of jealousy. Back then, few people were really artists so the only way to stay on top was by guarding technical info. A lot of people profess to want to better the craft and make it more acceptable but they are against making knowledge available. There is no way to ever stop scratchers but their numbers can be reduced by making this book available. There are people who don't want to scratch and want to do things right. They just don't know where to find the info. I was there myself once. I do think they should want it bad enough to pay for it though and your price is more than reasonable.

Apprenticeship is not always what it's cracked up to be. Some guys will take your money and not really give you what you need. I walked into Bob Shaw's on the Pike about the time he invented the swing gate and asked him about an apprenticeship and I am positive he would have been good as gold but I didn't have $2,500 at the time. While I was there, he put in an outline of a tattoo that covered a guy's calf. He did it so fast it was like he was signing his name. I never saw a machine that ran so fast and a guy who could keep up with it. I was amazed. I could have had a cheaper apprenticeship at Leroy's down the street (he showed me some pictures of tattoos he did on Arnold the pig from the TV show Green Acres). Doc Web in San Diego told me Leroy would more than likely rip me off so I declined. Doc Web was a kind and generous man. He was not taking apprenticeships but he told me how to fix some problems I was having. In an hour of shooting the shit with him he explained a lot of stuff and for free.

If your book was available to me 30 years ago and all I had to do was cut off my big toe to get it, you would be calling me gimpy. There will always be bung holes who dishonor the trade. I have seen a guy doing a tattoo with a bare needle bar loop riding on a bare armature pin doing the hula. He put his tubes and bars in a device that steamed hair curlers and thought it was sterilizing things. You kind of have to give him a little credit for the attempt at sterilizing. He could have just wiped the stuff off under his arm pit.

AMPUTATION - WORTH OUR BOOK!!

I think a tattoo artist should reach celebrity status because they are in fact a great artist with technical discipline and not because they are hording knowledge.

I have read people complaining that your book is too much money on the net. They have to be the dumbest, cheapest sheep fuckers that ever crawled out from under a rock. The no BS info in that book is priceless.

P.S one more story, I had a friend (now deceased). He told me he knew Don Nolan. He noticed a machine spring on his key chain. He asked him why and he said " because that spring made me a million dollars ".

high efficient of wrap coils for tattooing... WTF?

Here we go! What a deal...direct from China - $5.00 if you buy 20. The thing is, the specifications are probably good on these frames! A little knowledge and elbow grease and you could make these run good. Once you flip the upside down capacitor, replace the springs, re insulate the coil wire that joins the capacitor on the rear terminal, make sure the armature bar is parallel with the base, replace the "weighted" armature bar, replace the o-ring, replace the round washer with a squared off washer on to hold the rear spring, replace the screws because these are sure to strip, put a longer nylon contact securing screw in the side of the binding post, adjust the stroke, check the spring tension... tune and test... refine and use. Got the time? Got the knowledge?

Maybe you wanna replace the springs with these... c'mon, take a chance! What have you got to lose? only $65 dollars for 100 of them! Do you know what these are made from? Does this manufacturer know? is it high carbon or low carbon steel? maybe an alloy of some kind? is the 16 gauge 16 or do they mean .016? does the manufacturer know anything about these springs? Which would you choose? We need to understand flexibility - how much is too much? how little is too little? WE KNOW... AND YOU COULD AND SHOULD TOO.

Suppliers who sell these things DO NOT KNOW OR CARE. The performance of a machine depends on the springs - (gauge, tension & flexibility) in relation to the output of the coils. The results on any given tattoo depend on the springs. Artistic technique and skill depend on the springs. Tension, material , gauge and flexibility are ALL crucial criteria in the choice of springs. Why? because the only moving part is the armature bar assembly with it's front and rear springs... it's movement depends on the right tension, the force at which the needle hits the skin depends on the correct flexibility and tension. It can mean the difference between blown out lines and spotty shading!

Suppliers sell springs ranging from .015 to .022. Why? much of this selection is unusable. This is the truth. Why do they sell such a range? Because they know that they don't know and most artist don't know either. Call one of them up and ask - "what technique is a .015 spring specifically used for?"

How can an artist or supplier take this product seriously with a letter like this?

This type of carelessness ends up in the hands of non professionals because these manufacturers DO NOT CARE WHO THEY SELL TO and as funny as the wording sounds in this letter, this is a serious threat to our industry. It lowers standards, it lowers pride, it conflicts with competitors, it cheapens the industry, it invites everybody and their brother in, and leaves the rest of us with a mess to clean up.

Artists who educate themselves about their machines will never have to worry about any of these threats. They can choose to buy or not because they will be able to put these cheap machines into working order if they decide to buy one. Some are not too different from some of the "reputable" builders' machines!

LEARN, UNDERSTAND, SET STANDARDS, MOVE FORWARD, BE A PROFESSIONAL.

BALANCE?

Are you considering buying machines from suppliers, from machine builders, or manufacturers who offer simplistic descriptions of their machines like: "This high quality machine is designed with balance in mind and is tuned to perform." or "color packer

What makes that machine a "High quality machine"? Who is the person who labeled it a "high quality machine"? what is the basis for this description? What is the comparison? in an industry where there is NO STANDARD in the technical requirements of a machine, Where builders copy each other - same 8 layer coil, same capacitor...Where the chinese non - tattooist sells machines hand over fist to suppliers who sell these machines hand over fist, Where the well known old school builder shops his products out to be built by non tattooists in China and trusts soccer moms with no tattoos to manage the Italian division of his machine empire... even the builders who are tattooists that don't understand anymore about true function than they do about doing a portrait and what is required for a machine to be able to reach that result... think about it.

Balance?... yeah right. Take a look at the above machine. If you were to rest it on the tip of the tube and let go, which way is it gonna fall? Really... balance? When it's in your hand, which way is it going to fall? Is balance even a relevant issue? Weight may be an issue and if you're making machines out of steel (like the builder who offered us that technical description) or brass, the issue of balance REALLY goes out the window! The weight of those materials would cause more gravitational pull in the direction of the greater mass!!! How can the use of the word "balance" even be a technically acceptable term to entice any artist to buy that machine?

Next - "tuned to perform" - to perform how? will it be incrementally sensitive between 0 and 7? doubtful. How do we know how it will perform based on a photograph AND the word of a manufacturer who may or may not know or understand what is needed in a machine for it to be able to deliver fine clean lines, even smooth shading, solid color? TUNED TO PERFORM...

There is a problem here and there is a solution. When true talent is weighed against "he's a great artist, he can finish a whole back in 8 hours..." something is truly wrong. When the functional technical description of the main tool of your trade is "This high quality machine is designed with balance in mind and is tuned to perform" call them and ask them to tell you specifics - do these builders or suppliers care wether you are doing good work with their "well balanced" machines?

We are in 2011 and they still talk about balance...

IF YOU HAVE A TIGHTLY WOUND COIL WITH PERFECT LAYERS.. NO GAPS, YOUR COIL, WHEN ACTIVATED, WILL PRODUCE A BETTER MAGNETIC FIELD THAN A COIL WHICH HAS GAPS IN THE WIRE.

TO PROGRAM A COIL WINDING MACHINE TO DO THIS AND MAKE THE COILS PERFECT EVERY TIME VERSUS A HUMAN WINDING HIS OWN AND WITH HUMAN ERROR INCLUDED. WHICH HAS A BETTER CHANCE TO PRODUCE A PERFECT COIL?

AND YET THE MOTOR IS THE SAME EVO MOTOR MOUNTED ON EVERY BUILDER'S FRAME. DO THESE BIKE BUILDERS BUILD THEIR OWN MOTORS? DO THESE FRAME DESIGNERS USE THE SAME 8 LAYER COIL? SAME CAPACITOR AS THE NEXT GUY? DO THEY EVEN KNOW WHAT CAPACITANCE IS? DO THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT IS NEEDED FOR PROPER MACHINE FUNCTION? MEXICO CITY TATTOO CONVENTION, OCT. 29 & 30, 2011

Mexico City Tattoo convention organizer Tony Serrano from Tatuajes Mexico, asked us to do a machine seminar. There were 16 artists in the class. We covered everything in our book and more. The goal is more than just to educate artists, for us, it's important to find people who are on the same page and want to be a part of the solution and NOT part of the problem. First you need to wake up and see that there is a problem and then tear it down bit by bit.

"HOW MANY OF YOU MAKE YOUR OWN NEEDLES?" Looks like 2 or so.. the rest?

The way to maintain quality control over every aspect of your tattooing is to understand every aspect of your tattooing. What you're actually doing when you step on the footswitch, when you put the needles in to the skin, the types of needles you are using, the quality of the pigment. Almost all tattoo supply companies don't care if you're doing good work with the products they sell. Almost all tattoo supply companies don't care if the products they sell are truly functional. Almost all tattoo supply companies don't understand what they are really selling. Almost all tattoo supply companies have never used the products they sell. Almost all artists trust these suppliers to supply them with quality functional products... these suppliers buy and sell products manufactured by people who do not tattoo, people who do not understand what functions are necessary in a tattoo machine. This is only a small part of the problem. Now, hopefully, these 16 students will not be taken by the hype in this unregulated business oriented supplier / artist relationship.

Is a product really successful if it's "readily available" to the public? REALLY? If you can supply it to anybody who wants it, does it really fit the definition of successful? Maybe if the product is looked at as just that, a product... a product like toilet paper, like a bic lighter... when we're talking about tattoo machines what are we really talking about? We're talking about a tool, and everything involved in the use of the tool. Safety, reliability, easy operation and functionality. Thanks to Brett Fischer for reaffirming this view! And it's true!! IT IS A TOOL!

When WE think about the tattoo machine as a tool which we sell, we as builders / inventors and artists of 26 1/2 years, go a step further (and we should all go a step further) and think about these things, IN OUR DEFINITION OF THEM -

SAFETY - (putting the machine in the right tattooist's hands, selling to suppliers who are like minded - suppliers who do not take returned (used) machines and re sell them covered in bio hazard, suppliers who understand function and what the tattoo artist/client needs in a machine, and what the tattoo client needs in the healing process of his artistically perfect tattoo.

RELIABILITY - a machine which is tuned and ready to handle any technique, a machine which is guaranteed against defects and will be repaired if there is a manufacturing defetct, a machine manufactured from the highest quality materials using only the most functionally optimal wire gauges, steel, spring gauges, screw materials, frame specs...

Imagine if this type of character was real, he would be shaded exactly like this. Note the highlights, the shades, the attention paid to the shoe laces, the direction of the light source... this tattoo shows a real eye for detail and understanding of how to reach this outcome. In our minds he is the winner. We took a look at his other submissions and we saw a real versatility in his work. All with that touch of realism that separates imaginary / rudimentary traditional style tattooing from the more advanced technique oriented styles.

THERE IS NO POINT IN USING SH*TTY NEEDLES.

A perfect 7 needle grouping will run along the back of the tube tip without wiggling because the solder is pulled smoothly down from the needle bar to about 3/16" of an inch from the needle tips.

IT IS SUCH A THROW AWAY WORLD! (This is written for non - tattooers as well.) In almost everything, If you don't like it, throw it away - it's cheap technology!! Tattoo machines made in China for $40.00 dollars each, plastic disposable tubes - which is not a bad thing as far as ideas go... then there are the pre made needles!

When we started tattooing in 1985, part of the craft that was still alive and well and very necessary was "needle making". Where you actually took loose pins and soldered them into groupings used for lining, shading.. coloring. These are our paint brushes! The quality of the tattoo partly depends on the way your machine runs, partly on the skill and talent of the artist AND in the quality of the needles - the material, the gauge and the length of the taper...

This blob of solder will cause a needle to wiggle against the back of the tube tip. This was a shader taken right out of the blister pack in a box FULL of pre made needles. And some of these artists think it's the machine's fault.

We aren't just talking about the quality of the stainless steel, we are talking about the length of the tapers, the needle gauge... penetration is everything. Easy penetration = less pain, smoother shading, solid color and perfect crisp lines. These are things that can be regulated by educated artists.

Education is important. THESE days, the craft is lost. Needle making is out, (not for all of us)... Artists can buy whatever they want, and they do so without a care about who's making the needles. All they know is that they save time by buying pre mades. Not all of these pre made needles are good!! If these artists knew what they were looking for, they would NOT buy from most of these suppliers! The cheap product yields higher profits for the supplier but yields patchy color, inconsistent shading and fuzzy lines.

It's not just the solder blobs that have to be watched out for!

Pins come in specific gauges, all the needles in any grouping of pins should be the same gauge AND have the same taper length - this means consistency. Some of these Chinese needle pre-made needle groupings come with a few different gauge pins in the same grouping! We have seen a few short tapered .012 gauge pins soldered into a grouping of OO long tapered bug pins!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!! This is so negligent. Artists these days are also negligent for taking the quality of these foreign products for granted.

As tattooing has grown, so has the demand for supplies. Tons of people who should not have been involved in our business have been let in... the ignorant artist is to blame. It's time to take charge and regulate what products we use. In the end, the most important person in the equation is the client!

Here's why...

The moral decline of the industry..the rapid downhill slide in tattooing-the forgotten history, the forgotten ethics, the forgotten most important unspoken rules that any professional tattoo artist should abide by and respect...has pretty much faded away...what do we have left?...Yea, there's a million of great artists but just as many or more incompetent wannabees out there moving in....and it's not about how we let them affect us and our industry as much as in how we police ourselves in order to make sure none of us get rained on by being under this cloud of shit...we need to be better than that.

How do we remedy this??? BY LIVING UNDER THE MOTTO : "being a part of the problem and NOT being a part of the solution"... BY EDUCATING AS MANY OF THESE CLUELESS INTRUDERS MAY BE THE ONLY OPTION...TO PROVE THAT WE, AS EXPERIENCED TATTOO ARTISTS AND MANUFACTURERS, HAVE ETHICS, WE HAVE STANDARDS AND WE HAVE PROFESSIONALISM.

We need to know our machines, technique as it relates to machine function, provide perfect customer service if we are suppliers, tattoo artists or manufacturers...and sadly, in as much as we hate to, we have to accept that we are either floating or drowning a growing tide of present and future ignorance.

HENCE why we don't have an office phone...we save ourselves the grief of having to answer IDIOTIC phone calls and STAY strict to the RULE-WE SELL TO PROFESSIONALS ONLY.

The list is endless...it goes on and on...sadly the fact is that we are in a booming unregulated industry. We have to be above the ignorance and in order to better the industry. The only answer for the global clean up is to keep the ethics alive along with knowledge of the past required necessities of our craft such as needle making and machine tuning.

We are glad to share with you some of the tremendously F*CKED up things that have transpired in the eventful world of Godoy Machines...we will start by sharing the sad sad story of a pathetic supplier passing the blame on an artist for intending to have the CHINESE bootleg/manufacture Godoy Machines...theres a reason we have made these INNOVATIVE AND ORIGINAL MACHINES hard to duplicate and copy...for situations like this.

s a "client" and not a tattooist, your blog is tops! I found it had really useful info for what to be aware of when getting tattooed.. I've passed your blog addy onto some younger, less "adorned" friends, who, coming from a freaking small place like Tassie may not know what to expect or what to demand, more importantly.. anyway, tattooing is rad and just because I can only get them, and can't make them myself, I still want to know everything about them and the machinisms (?) behind them. yay. TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT THESE MACHINES. We repair machines, we tune machines, we modify machines. These machines have been abused and mistreated. The rust on the armature bars shows a total disregard for the main tool of their trade. How do we know there aren't pathogens all over these machines? if this artist uses these, how does he / she know that there aren't pathogens, ready to infect the client? Obviously, this artist sprays down their machines with a virucide which corrodes and oxidizes steel. The handling of these machines will be done with GLOVES ON!! And guaranteed, the screws will be very difficult to get out.

This type of carelessness in artists is what we're attacking. So many artists are so wrapped up in brand name, hype, attitudes and egos, into their images and grooming their "tattoo artist" uniforms that they forget that knowledge is KEY!! In the process of becoming recognized as "tattoo artist", they have forgotten about the most important ingredient in their rock star world - THE CLIENT! THE GUY WHO PAYS THE BILLS, THE GUY WHO INNOCENTLY COMES INTO THE SHOP LOOKING FOR A TATTOO FOR WHATEVER REASON, AND EXPECTS IT TO GET DONE. Not all are educated enough to look the place over and see that there is barrier film over EVERYTHING the artist could touch with his / her dirty gloves!!! This includes bags on machines, clip cords, counter, bottles... this is up to us - to regulate ourselves.

Another issue we have is confidence in suppliers. We have had artists send back machines for repairs - even our own machines occasionally need a tune up. Some suppliers have told us that their clients have wanted to return certain brand machines because they are not performing... and some ACTUALLY HAVE TAKEN THE MACHINES BACK AND REPLACED THEM WITH ANOTHER!!! For those of you who have never done business with Steve Godoy, this is my personal experience:

Communication was excellent. From the first reply, to a follow up that he did while on his personal vacation (to insure my machines had arrived in good order), communications were professional, immediate and effective.

Repairs were done on two machines which were manufactured by two very high profile tattoo machine builders (who shall remain nameless). I immediately noticed the quality of replacement parts used, and, the care in replacing. These machines have never run better.

Pricing was more than fair for the quality and service provided.

In my opinion, unless you are exceptionally apt at tattoo machine tuning, there is no reason to go through trial and error and ordering expensive, sub quality tattoo machine parts that look good in catalog and internet pictures. I would highly recommend using Steve Godoys services. He is professional, honest, trustworthy and knows his business.

The problem that South Africa had for so many years is that we were blocked from the world and no decent info was coming in about machines, inks or anything else to do with tattooing, that is why I started doing Germany conventions back in 1997 so I could start meeting other artists and learn as much as I could. Even with participation at the conventions you were closed off if you did not know the right artist. Thankfully many top guys started to do seminars which opened the door to so many great learning experiences to improve what we chose to do for a living.

What I liked about Art and Steve’s seminar was that they weren’t out only out to punt their machines, it was about making the machines that you own work without working hard. What I mean by this is everyone thinks that the machine must run fast and hard, the old school way which fucks up the skin and scars it so the blind can read it like brail, your client is in pain and you eventually go deaf.

A Tattoo machine is your bread and butter so it needs to be treated with respect. Art and Steve understand that when you set up your machine to work to at its best it will hum and not over heat. Your client will sit far longer and in less pain so you can give them the tattoo they deserve and not some scared piece of crap that will blow out.

I do believe that we should do any decent seminars available as we do not know everything; if you walk out of a seminar and have learnt just one thing then you are better off than you were before you went in and that is what it is all about for me.

If you think you know it all do us a favour and pack it in as you are not doing your clients justice and will carry on fucking them up.

So for the post seminar - The seminar is about knowing what your machine is saying to you while using it. Without this information your machine could be screaming at you and you’ll never understand what it's saying or be listening. I expect to see less tattoo machines land up in the “fuck that machine it does not work” drawer and instead finds itself on the work bench for a little TLC so it can keep on working for you and not you for it.

"I was late falling in love with tattooing.. I started out looking for an apprenticeship when I turned 29 and even though I could draw well, had good business sense and didn't have a "tough girl" attitude I was surprised how few people in the industry in South Africa would give me the time of day. After going through a less than adequate apprenticeship and working in ego-driven street shops trying to figure everything out on my own I opened my own shop http://www.thebodyarchitects.com/studio.html . I still to this day don't know how I had the balls to do it given I'd only been tattooing for just under 3 years but hell, the shop exploded and we thrived our first year.

I always had this underlying feeling however that I wasnt in full control of my work. My machines confounded and frustrated me and I must have gone through ten new machines in that year, throwing each one into the drawer of death when they inevitably disappointed me with inconsistency and never ending problems. Who the hell do you turn to when no one wants to talk? Does everyone go through this and if so WHY?? There are so many of us.. all throwing our toys when our machines fail us, knowing that if we had full control we would be able to pull off such great work.. which is after all the reason we should all be doing this. To create beautiful, lasting tattoos with minimal discomfort and maximum enjoyment for our customers. No inflated ego, tough talk or hardcore image is gonna hide the fact that your tattoos suck ass.

Looking for answers online and asking other artists who also learned by trial and error never helped, until the Godoy's shone a lil light on the subject! The seminar helped me to change my whole attitude towards my machines. They don't control my work anymore and I can do a better job with less stress for me and the person I'm tattooing.

The seminar did something else too.. for one day everyone in that room was equal. We were all tattooers, looking for answers and everyone talked and shared their stories. It's amazing what can happen when egos are left at the door and the passion for the art of tattooing is once again the only thing that matters.

Art and Steve have a "no bullshit" approach in everything they do. They know what they are talking about because they've been through everything already. Listening to them talk was truly inspiring and being at the seminar was possibly one of the highlights of my carreer thus far. I know I can always carry that knowledge with me and where I can, pass it along.

The industry is changing, even since I started I can see how it's grown and shifted. I used to have people stare and scowl at me on the street, pull their kids away.. but now tattooing is on the TV and everyone and their kids are getting tattooed cos they saw it on Miami Ink. There isn't any stopping that. People want drama and tattooing is flavour of the month. The only thing we can do to ensure the bubble doesn't burst is be responsible, be informed and keep our heads out of our own asses. We aren't rockstars, we are artists who put their work on human skin. It's a practice to be respected and it's up to all of us to stay true to that."

Skills happen when you pay attention and do the time. How many times do I hear, “I can’t even draw a stick man!”… Those assholes are hard as hell to draw, are you kidding me!? Leave the stick men to the traditional tattooers.Try drawing something else! You have to put in the time for anything worthwhile, really.

When I was a kid, my dad told me, “As soon as you think you know everything,youdon’t know anything.” You’ll never be the best. Ever. A lot of people have a real problem with this idea, (myself included). It’s irritating and comforting at the same time.

When I first started tattooing, about 8-9 years ago, I remember looking at tattoos in magazines and thinking, “Alright, one day when I can tattoo like THIS guy, I’ll have made it.” I’m sure everyone’s been there at some point. It wasn’t very long before I was there. What the hell? The industry had moved ahead as well; quite quickly in fact. Now there are more magazines and websites showcasing amazing tattooers, rubbing my own artistic inadequacies in my face. Fuckers. What an amazing time to tattoo, and yet so frustrating. It just feels like I can never keep up. It’s all perspective I guess. There’s someone starting out somewhere, right?

What is the problem?

The problem is NOT that the Chinese are making our industry cheap by manufacturing cheap machines.

The problem is NOT the stupid TV shows that paint tattooing in such a lame and inaccurate way.

The problem is not the suppliers selling substandard products - spring gauges that you will never use such as .015 - .016 and .020 and higher... and the blue springs... which are a low grade tempered and stiffer than the gauge that they are labeled...

THE PROBLEM is the ignorant artist who does not realize that even a Chinese machine can be made good - the specs are the same, there is little difference between Chinese 1010 steel and American 1010 steel... 24g copper magnet wire and Chinese 24g copper magnet wire, which is mined in South Africa!! So, country is irrelevant... it's the specs that count, and the hands that that machine are in.

TO BE A TRUE PROFESSIONAL, ONE MUST BE ABLE TO DIAGNOSE AND REPAIR HIS / HER MACHINE. IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND YOUR MACHINE, THEN YOU DO NOT TRULY UNDERSTAND WHAT GOES ON WHEN THE NEEDLE GOES IN. THIS WILL HAVE AN AFFECT ON THE FINAL RESULT.

There are a lot of artists who are who expect the machine to do it all for them. If you deny it, then look at the facts:

- Pre made needles - made for you, are all the needles in that grouping the same taper? doubtful... in many cases, made in china - some short tapers and some long in the same 9 mag grouping.

RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU MAKE YOUR OWN NEEDLE GROUPINGS? WE DO, EVERYDAY.

- Pre packaged disposable tubes... made to order...

Most artists are too SCARED TO LEARN that:

- Buying by brand is a JOKE. How many 'reputable' manufacturers actually tattoo?

-By saying a MACHINE IS BAD you are showing you ignorance and inexperience in this TRADE...if a machine has a set of coils mounted on a frame with a capacitor, has a connector post wether it be RCA or clip cord, an upper binding post with a contact screw, a set of springs attached to an armature bar... then how bad is it????

An email from an inexperienced unqualified artist prompted this blog...the poor guy is looking for answers and doesn't even trust himself to learn how to diagnose, tune, rebuild and modify his machines, he rattles off name brands as if they mean anything or as if they will give him some kind of authority... all he can do is blame...

He is blaming because he actually has NO CLUE on machine function: the most important tool of this trade!!! I cant even imagine what his tattoo work looks like!!!

It is an amazing machine and i used the hell out of it over the course of the past few years however over time it has lost a bit of its punch and the throw is different. I'm honestly not that inclined in the mechanics of tattoo machines..and even if I was i would doubt i could mess with the setup of the Godoy machines. Scrappy consistently wins competitions. Plain and simple... the guy is a world class tattooist from Mexico City. He specializes in portraits and realism... black n grey. His work can be used as a standard to compare wether or not some one's work is up to par. Really... black and grey uses techniques that artists who only do color and bold lines would not understand. It's safe to say that if you understand these techniques, all the rest will be easy.

We get lots of people who come into the shop who have been tattooed in Mexico.. usually at a resort town.. and they always laugh and say "I know it sucks, I got it in Mexico." A good artist should be able to diagnose problems, repair and tune his/her machines. That artist should understand the function of that machine in association with artistic technique. This is the difference between real professionals and amateurs. The difference between gliding through a 1 hour tattoo as opposed to suffering for 2 or 3 hours using a machine which it not tuned.

The machine can't be bought (usually) and expected to perform, right out of the box. Unless it was built by artists/builders who UNDERSTAND what that machine needs, in order to achieve certain results.

People often bring up this complaint in reference to Chinese business practices... when you someone claims to want to "build the best American made products" and STEALS, without license, they are in the same category.

Patent protection is the only way to legally protect your intellectual property. WE don't make a move until we have our patent process underway. This is our standard protocol. We design, prototype and test all of our products before committing to a patent. Any infringers will be notified, and subject to any penalties as a result of their actions. Infringers include ANY distributor or purchaser of the said invention.

If you plan to buy a patent, it is important to check the validity of that patent. Not all examiners at the patent office are equally as thorough during the examination process and sometimes patents slide through for approval without any office actions!!! We were offered a couple of patents for purchase which we had to reject due to their questionable validity.

OUR STANCE

We do not license any of our patents for the simple reason that we believe and have always believed that reputation is earned by merit and contribution, not by false claims or by purchasing the rights to an invention, or by copying an invention. In other words, "do your own f*cking work".

We will continue to keep this manifesto because everything comes clean in the wash and the laundry was just put into the washer.

GODOY MACHINES

This is the NEW steel BLACK WIDOW machine. It's coils are not only triangular in shape, the space between the protruding tops and bottoms allow for more winds of wire. It is a strong smooth running machine, yet sensitive and versatile enough to execute the finest details with the smallest needle groupings as well as subtle grey shades.

Most machine suppliers will sell a machine for the fair market price, but now that China is involved, the price does not always match the product. Most artists want to buy a machine which is ready to go. Buy one of those and if you don't know how to adjust of modify it, the price just wasn't worth it. This is the Godoy Machines V3 machine. This piece of machinery has had year of designing and testing. It happens to be our 3rd patent in the works!! The way this machine runs doesn't compare to ANY machine out there. Every component has been dissected and re worked for function and ergonomics. From the precise machining to the tight layer winds, from the deluxe powder coated finishes to the minor details like fasteners and terminals... this is a piece of highly functional art. Because of the coils shapes, there are more layers of wire than on a standard machine. It will operate at between 6 and 7.5 on your regulated power supply. The Godoy Machines V2... what can I say. Before our office actions with the square coil patent, we were experimenting with a V series coil. The shape of the coil, the angles of the coil... and of course the wire gauges were all things we were studying. We were also concerned with the magnetic field and how to direct it to where we wanted it to go. We slanted the coils, away from each other to re direct the magnetic field to either end of the moving armature bar, and here ya go... the V2 was born. Future modifications lead us to now, where the rear coil is straight and the front coil is angled.

We use aluminum primarily in our manufacturing of frames due to it's lightness and rigidity. Any artist(s) who speak negatively about an aluminum machine are doing so out of ignorance. Aluminum is an excellent metal to build frames out of because it has all the properties necessary for quality machining. It's soft enough to cut, engrave, drill and tap yet rigid enough to support all the machine's components.

Some peope don't get it. The would look at tattoos like this and go "why would someone put that message on their skin?... forever!" The simple answer is cuz they don't give a f*ck what YOU think! Instead of looking at the finished product and admiring the stunning, decorative and perfect lettering done by Juan, and how aesthetically perfectly it fits on Mark's back, people always have something negative to say.

Just look at the perfection. The cleanest lines around, the smooth transition from dark to light on the shading. and look how perfectly it fits...

Check this! Probably one of the largest TASMANIAN DEVILS ever done!!! Fester knocked it out quickly and executed it in awesome style. Most people get them smaller. This guy knew what he wanted and how he wanted it. He had a story to accompany it as well. Some tattooers would say, "I'll never do a Tasmanian Devil.." We ask "Why not?" they would in turn give you some recycled answer they have heard some place before, from another un original artist... trying to act as if it's below them to tattoo this image. When in reality, who gives a fuck? It's a customer service job and they act like they're doing the client a favor!! Egos and attitudes have no place in this trade. One these guys are serving burgers and the next they're tattoo artists... it's an immediate image upgrade from ordinary to rock star status! Silly... don't stand for it! If you go into a shop and get treated like a turd, leave and come here!!

I (ART) started tattooing Julia in 1991 in Newport Beach California. She walked in one day without any tattoos, hoping to get some relief from a skin condition which was a side effect of her liver producing too much iron for her blood. The skin condition manifested itself in the form of blisters which were as deep as 3rd degree burns. They commonly show up on the hands and face mostly but other body parts were affected. She made an appointment to start tattooing her body suit for the following week. Twice a week for the next 7 years and about 2300 hours later, she was the most tattooed woman in the world. I moved to Canada in about 1998 and my brother Steve took over where I left off. We have appeared on the Guiness Prime time TV show, You Asked for It, Ripley's Believe it or not, Pro Sieben TV (Germany)... and many more.

Recently, she was in Milan where she was AGAIN voted most tattooed woman. There have been several contenders but none with the coverage she has. I look at her photos and it's hard to believe that she was my project...and my brother's, and we feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to opportunity to tattoo her, to have had the recognition we have had and at the same time, be able to restore confidence and happiness in Julia's life, by putting images on her skin which she loves to look at everyday instead of blisters and the scars they leave.

People judge all the time but they don't know her story. If I was in her shoes, I would do the same thing. When experimental medication causes blindness, when dermabrasions and chemical peels only left scars... when doctors said there was NO treatment available which would end this condition, tattooing saved her sanity & happiness. I have had one well known local artist tell me that what I did was "wrong" and that he wouldn't want to "contribute to another person's nightmare". How can this be considered a nightmare when she smiles everyday, now knows Quincy Jones, has been asked by Aerosmith to appear in the "Pink" video, she gets paid for TV appearances, she is flown all over the world - all expenses paid, to show herself off... and all because she wanted to remedy a condition which NOBODY could treat, except tattooing.

Diego Morales is an Argentine tattoo artist who lives and works at his own shop "Fusion Tattoo" in Alicante, SPAIN. We met him and his wife Fatima while doing a seminar in Castellon, Spain at a tattoo convention. He and his wife have become really great friends and business associates. They distribute our machines in Spain and set up yearly machine seminar tours for us. Pictured here is one of his machines. This one is ALL hand made. Lots of cutting and filing, coil winding, finishing. He is known for his precision and eye for details. His tattooing is great too.

Look at the craftsmanship. The insulation, the care he took to shrink the coils and polish the binding posts... this is a quality product made by an artist who TRULY knows his trade inside and out.

LIMA PERU - TATTOO CONVENTION LAST YEAR

Lima is a rad city. Peru is a real gem. It is full of unexpected surprises!! We were scheduled to do a seminar at the convention put on by Ramon. There are 2 conventions that happen there, one is put on by Ramon and the other by Miguel... We prefer Ramon's convention. It is bi annual and very professional.

We usually arrive at least a day prior to the event so we can iron out any kinks before we do the seminar, wether we need to buy tools, supplies, copy participation certificates or whatever it may be. On our way to do our shopping routine, we walked past a music store, saw some stuff we wanted to check out. While we were there, a guy came up to us, he said he recognized us from Thrasher Magazine from 1990!! He was an ex-sponsored skater named Juani Masias... we made friends and set up a time to surf in the morning. Morning came too soon, but we were excited to surf Peruvian waves!!! He picked us up and we were off...

We drove south down the coast passing old parts of the city which were once trendy and have lost their modern appeal. These places were full classic architecture, and very colorful. You would expect this country to be warm all year round but that is not the case! Remember, when you move further from the equator, in either direction, you start to have seasons. These seasons on opposite ends of the globe, are opposite from each other. For instance, when it's winter in Canada, it's summer in Argentina. Same as Peru. We were there in their fall... the water was cold, in this photo, you can see the greyness... look at Steve freezing his ass off...

Behind Steve is where we surfed. The beach was called Caballeros... it breaks into a cove, there are rights and lefts. This day, there were waves, it was 6-8 feet on the face. If you look to the left in the photo, around the middle of the picture, you will see some waves breaking WAY outside... this peak is called "Pico Alto". This is a HUGE wave.. it breaks way out and you have to be towed into it in order to get on. You wouldn't have the strength to paddle onto it on your own. In this photo, we're facing the ocean, what do you think is behind us when you're looking toward the ocean? Topical Greenery? Palms? NOPE!!!

Sand dunes and more sand dunes. Those are all little ghetto houses on the side of the dune. As desolate as it looks, it has a real cool personality. The waves were clean and good... strong and relatively uncrowded. It was a good time. Our friend Juani, shaped one of the boards we took out. Totally functional but visually unconventional. We came in and got some food at the restaurant/surf shop there before we headed back to the city.

The way back was interesting too!! We were re routed to different roads due to a potential riot about to happen. There were cops in riot gear, shields and helmets... people on the other side of the street ready to go. Not sure what it was about, but after many travels in South America, we could guess that it may have something to do with the government f*cking their people over in some way.

How many of you readers have eaten ceviche? It's a raw fish prepared in lime juice. The lime juice "cooks" the fish. Peru is well known for that dish, as well as a juice made out of corn! This was on the menu for us that night. The traditional Peruvian foods we ate were great. There was one in particular which was NOT so hot... anticuchos... cow heart. Not so good.

The tattoo convention was great, it was packed. In our seminar, we met several artists from different countries, the most standout ones were the Naranjo Brothers. They are from Ecuador, Quito to be exact. The shop they own is called House of Style. They are unreal artists... both of them. Mauro is the older brother, he is a machine builder as well. His creations are original and very well tuned. It shows in the tattoos he does... we met other brothers there who bought machines from us. In the photo below, they teamed up on a back piece. They finished this in 5 hours. The client sat like a champion!

The convention was a success for us and even if it wasn't monetarily profitable, just being there is worth every penny you spent. The culture is rad, the people are cool, the scenery is unbelievable, the waves were quality, the food delicious... can't wait to go again!

TATTOO CONVENTION - MONTERREY, NUEVO LEON MEXICO

The tattoo convention in Monterrey Mexico is one of the biggest in the country. The one this year happened March 5-7... Look at the size of that crowd, that wasn't even ALL the people who were there. Behind the booths to the left were way more... Here we see the best tattoo of the day awards being given out, this guy ended up in 3rd place.

Here are some more images of tattoos which were entered. There are way more on my memory card... will put em up later. Any of you who tattoo that live in North America, take note.. these weren't even the winners. Mexico excels in black n grey, and realism...their style of traditional BLOWS AWAY the simplistic Americana shit we see constantly.

THIS TRIP WAS SO FULL OF COINCIDENCES!!

SO many that it seemed like they were meant to be. We were on our way to get some banners made, since we had forgotten ours, dropped off the art work, went to make some stickers and got directions for a taqueria which has a reputation for being the best around. On the way there, we saw a little gallery on a side street called the GODOY GALLERY... our last name is pretty rare, we decided to stop in and meet GODOY, the owner. The Gallery was small in the front part of it, a counter and TONS of art for sale... mostly pictures of women with big t*ts. There were post cards, business cards, sheets with descriptions of astrological signs and pairings...

We got invited to an art show that night, we went... coincidentally it was all tattoo related, another coincidence - it was put on by a friend of our - FLACO, in association with Dr. Lakra.!!

Here is Steve standing next to the part of the exhibit which showcased record covers which included tattoos. Here is GG Allin, the original scum f*ck. Steve tattooed him in 1986 with an exacto blade in Dallas Texas. It was a swastika inside an german cross. A few moments later, several tattooers whom we have know for a long time showed up!!! We met a photographer whose name was also GODOY!!!

Here we are at the gallery L to R - Art Godoy, Gallery Godoy, Akylez, Steve Godoy. There was alot of traditional style tattoo paintings as well as some odd items like this one! This rubber baby arm was actually tattooed with a machine and needle. There were tons of single needle line work, small and perfectly shaded roses, faces of women, sayings... very well done.

We also attended a Lucha Libre Femenil... all female wresting matches, which were held in a ring, outside!! It was great. All spectators were getting involved, between the women's fights, kids would go in the ring and beat each other up. Love to see that. The one in the purple glitter shorts is "Unicorn". She had a small horn in the middle of her mask. The one she's got in a hold is always seen doing the weather reports on TV!!! Unicorn kicked her ass by the way..

At the convention, we also met up with a long time friend "el Tigre" from Taxco Tattoo in Saltillo, Mexico. Such a great person. Not only is he a great artists, he's also a shamanic healer. He gets buried in the ground, digs his way out, walks for miles through the desert, eats some peyote, stares at the sun for hours... and then tattoos the next day...

STEVE, TIGRE AND ART.

TIGRE had a convention about 6 years ago which we proudly attended. He had put together a sweat lodge. For those of you who don't know what that is. It's a ceremony where people gather under a totally enclosed Teepee, were there is a hole dug in the ground in the center of it. HOT rocks are put in it and then water is poured on... it's basically a sauna, which gets hotter round after round. You go a round, take a break, another and take a break and keep doing this cycle until you get to the end. The goal was to make it through all 8 rounds. Man, you sweat an sweat. The sweat doesn't just "drip" off of you, it runs off of you like a faucet! At the middle of round 7, when we were totally dying in the suffocating heat, El Tigre was saying a prayer to the creator when someone farted... f*ck. Nobody wanted to admit it... we said, "c'mon, who did it? just admit it!!" Good thing we were sitting by the door flap and got outa there. It smelled like a combination of boiled eggs and dog sh*t. Almost made it....

MACHINE INFORMATION

We occasionally look at forums... well let us rephrase that. On certain searches, we accidentally get routed to forums where tattoo artists meet and gossip. Talking about things that could benefit the industry as a whole. And sometimes about things that they truly don't know about. The tattoo machine is one of them. One time, at a convention, we walked by a booth belonging to a well known machine manufacturer who was telling a client who just purchased a machine from him, "Ok, in 2 weeks, turn the contact screw a quarter of a turn and then run it for 30 days, after 30 days, turn it a quarter turn more and run it for 30 more days and it will adjust itself'." WHAT!!!??? PLEASE EXPLAIN. How will it adjust itself? Adjust itself for what function? These machines have no 'memory', they are simple... how will it recognize the input of the quarter turn and instinctively know how to 'adjust itself'? It is un believable... just like questioning a $100.00 price tag on a book that will take you to levels of tattooing you never thought you could reach because you have been struggling with machines that don't do what you need them to do. Getting advice from artists with 25 years tattooing experience, of which 19 years of that has been dedicated to tattoo machines is priceless... but, as usual, most people want something for nothing. Books cost money to print, they take time to lay out, to reread for errors, they take time to print... there's your first cost.. second, the information inside will make you money, and help improve your work - it will take one less worry away from your tattooing routine - THE MACHINE - so that you can concentrate on translating your art into a tattoo... not some half hearted effort. Knowledge is power. Educate yourselves. Don't let EGO get in the way of your progress. TATTOO MACHINES AND THEIR SECRETS is the way to go.

These are the days where people who don't tattoo are getting involved in our industry. Tattooing has been recognized as the 2nd fastest growing business in North America and this has invited non tattoo artist people who stand to make a substantial buck from selling products, which they know very little about, to artists who also know little about the products they are buying. As far as machines go, this presents a problem... for the artists who don't know their machines. As things have evolved from the beginning of time, products have made things so EASY, that almost every individual does not need to know anything... the "I'll just buy a new one" attitude is rampant, the craft is gone.. how many artists make their own needles? We're proud to say we do!! Same goes for machines... it's a throw away item now. We have seen machines on sale for 6 dollars on line!! Maybe you can afford a new machine when the one you are using isn't doing what you need it to do, but how can you call yourself a professional tattoo artists when you don't know how to fix or tune the main tool of your trade?

People live for hype, they believe it... look behind the products and you may be surprised at who is selling them. Everyone wants to buy a machine which is already "set up" and ready to tattoo. How do you buy a machine? do you buy for aesthetics? or do you buy because the catalog labels the machine "liner" or "shader"? How do you know that it's set up to line, shade or color, just by looking at the photo in the catalog? maybe you buy for "name brand". Many well known name brands outsource their manufacturing to people who don't tattoo, there is no quality control and guaranteed, they are probably built by NON tattoo artists who don't know what you need as an artist. The machine is simple, the recipe is over 100 years old and the truth is, there is little innovation these days... one guy copies another, who copies another, who copies another...

If you want to be a "portrait guy", why would you buy from an artist/builder who DOES NOT know or understand the techniques necessary to do even, smooth grey shades?, or who can't do fine lines? Some of these guys who can't apply these skills, often hide behind the excuse that the lines won't hold up in X amount of years, when the truth is, they can't do that type of tattooing!

Another question is: What is the difference between Chinese 24 gauge copper wire and North American 24 gauge copper wire? Is the American 1010 steel better than chinese 1010 steel? if the ingredients are the same, the coil shapes are the same, the core diameters are the same... what is the difference between these machines besides the frame design aesthetic? Maybe the spring gauges are different.

THINK!! Don't be fooled... vote for innovation, function and direction... vote for originality and individuality.. Educate yourselves and you will NEVER feel taken advantage of. You can buy ANY electromagnetic machine and know instinctively how to repair, modify and tune it, IF YOU UNDERSTAND IT!... there IS some hype to believe... In their race to expand and stay competitive with new products entering the marketplace the hype around encryption is attractive. Dig a bit deeper though and the stats show that US based industries alone have been losing over 60 billion a year to IP theft since 2000 - with job losses of over 375,000 climbing steadily each year. Ask any savvy Russian businessman about the certainty of such encryption products and he will just laugh. They know too well that cracking encryption codes and duplicating files are child's play for IT pirates worth their salt - and there are armies of them out there. Nothing is safe as yet, and the company that comes out with bullet-proof protection, tested against the highest hitting hackers, will reap an unimaginable gold-mine. Art and Steve's advice?

"Stay basic, stay safe and in control of your product. Until a 100% proof protection product arrives on the marketplace don't even think about going digital. You can't go past a hard copy because at least you know where your product is, you get to sleep at night and you get a return on most of what you own".

This foray into online sales has cost the Godoy's hundreds of thousands of dollars in real sales with an actual $100, 000 000 in copies having now been downloaded as of last month - not exactly a cracker of a year for the brothers Godoy. "Our strategy now centers around damage control. It is a real shock to the system that so much of our time has to go into protecting what's left. We are basically going to have to come up with new or superior products to regain our market (laughs) - it's a shame we did such a good a job of it in the first place..."
